Compare 5.299 ἀμφὶ δ' ἄρ' αὐτῶι βαῖνε λέων ὣς ἀλκὶ πεποιθώς, 300-1 being = 7-8 below. The point of the simile lies only in the affectionate care of the mother for her young; we can hardly read into it that she is warding off the attack of a beast of prey.
