Our objective in Year 3 has been the same in other years: to develop an extensive corpus of Renaissance Latin literature as a test-bed for a Digital Library system, incorporating newly digitized works, and works contributed by external institutions. We have completed the work for 6.1 and 6.2 on schedule.

WP 6 Final Report

We have finished our work on the corpus of digitized Renaissance Latin texts with the help of our Research Assistant (Jenny Nelson, a graduate student enrolled in the University of Kentucky Institute for Latin Studies); she has completed the text markup and, we have both done considerable editorial work on marked-up materials. Nelson devoted a great deal of time this semester editing texts we already had in our archive. It was a high priority this semester to make sure the text in the archive was free of errors, so she spent the time going through and checking both the Latin and Greek for correct spelling and markup. Because the Erasmus Colloquia and the text of the Encomium moriae came from various sources, we thought that it was important to have all of this material reflect a single edition, namely an 1867 edition entitled Desiderii Erasmi Roterodami colloquia familiaria et encomium moriae. With this goal in mind, Nelson went through all 63 colloquia and the Encomium moriae adjusting any orthographical and/or editorial discrepancies.

As for new material, Nelson located 5 new dialogues that we plan to add to our collection. They are by the following authors: MATHURINUS CORDERIUS, MARTINUS DUNCANUS, LAURENTIUS CORVINUS, SEBALDUS HEYDEN, and PAULUS NIAVIS. She prepared data entry specifications for the two texts that were legible enough to send off for data entry (Corderius and Duncanus), and arranged with an archive in Goettingen, Germany, to obtain a CD with 600 dpi images of the Heyden text, as it was not available in any form in any U.S. libraries.

In addition to this work we have re-evaluated the TEI header to make sure they reflect editorial decisions we have made regarding the collection, and included resource discovery information such as LC subject headings, call numbers, etc and integrated them into the FRBR standard with the Perseus collection.

We now have machine-readable versions of our Latin collection in an integrated reading environment with Latin Morphological Anaylser available on:
